I WANT HER...shoes?

October 4th 2006 02:10
She was wearing nothing but a pair of low-cut jeans and staring at me seductively…willing me in, wanting me to desire all of her and what she was…what she wore…that's when I knew she was a…supermodel? What does that mean anyway? That these women have super powers? Why don't I know about any male supermodels? Why is Kate Moss a supermodel? In Vogue Magazine it seems that every second advertisement features Kate Moss staring at you whether she is in a pair of -100 UV protection sunnies, an unaffordable handbag, jeans that would only fit her or dripping in jewels. Louis Vuitton, Dior, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Versace, Bvlgari, Longchamp and Belstaff and all in the first half of Vogue's October '06 issue. How ridiculous! It's bad enough that magazines tell women that they should aspire to be a certain shape, let alone one certain person! Talk about monopolistaion! Why her? Why is Moss a supermodel? Unfortunately, there are a hand full of professional, equally wiry coat hangers out there that could be in her place, but they're not. Is it the cocaine scandals that make her such a super "model"? Having the body of a thirteen year old in her thirties? Are these the things that have kept her in business for all these years? Why is everyone consuming Moss? I believe it's because she's "beautiful"-surprise! The thing is the idea of beauty is ridiculous. There are personal ideas of beauty, wider social ideas of beauty, changing historical ideas of beauty and different artistic and cultural ideas of beauty…my point is that beauty is a fickle notion and Moss's ability to commercially define it for over a decade is what makes her a super model. Moss may have used great management, networked connections, drug scandals (publicity) or an eating disorder…or the combination of all four to keep herself commercially viable. Kate Moss is beautiful because the media tells us so, a media backed by economically driven advertisements. Moss is now used by so many companies that the company that does not use her may feel economically vulnerable. This is like one country thinking another has a nuclear weapon, so that country makes a nuclear weapon to defend themselves, the initial country sees this and decides they need a nuclear weapon to defend themselves, the other country hears about this and makes another, as they want to have the most so they are safe…this is a never ending cycle…until everyone blows each other up that is. This is what Moss is a weapon, that is why everyone uses her, and why this model is super. Make love not war…destroy weapons of mass destruction!
