Fat Skinny People

A cover story in this years October issue of Who magazine titled "The Skinny Backlash: Bigger is Better" sported a photo of a skeletal Kate Bosworth side by side with a curvy Scarlet Johansson. I'm actually a fan of Scarlet's curves and do believe that a rapidly decaying human form is not a good role model for women, although I resent the label being placed on Ms Johansson. It seems that our society has become so alienated from the human figure that the branding of the form has become skewed. Kate Bosworth is not skinny, she is skeletal, and whilst Scarlet Johansson is curvy, she is skinny. It is precisely such imparted tabloid biases disclosing an influential idea of an "acceptable" female form that promotes discontentment among women about their appearance…which sells magazines. Next, they'll coin Jennifer Lopez as America's Next Top Plus sized model. Just because women do not bear boyish shapelessness and do hold womanly curves, does not mean they are not skinny. To make matters worse the article depicts plus-sized model Crystal Renn under the headline "Fashion's bigger future?", whilst the snippet seems to be celebrating this bigger figure….the same magazine which celebrated Kirstie Alley's weight loss in Who's July issue… Renn's figure does not look gaunt, yes, but "plus sized" no, perhaps this is due to clever lighting and camera angles, but in any case the picture Who magazine decided to present of Ms Renn, was less than "big". Magazines milk "skinny" people for being thin, fat people for being overweight…is there truly one size that fits all?
